FLOATING ROCKS by ex-Sherwoodian AKALP MUKIM
A few weeks ago, as part of the Telangana Government's beauficiaon of Hyderabad, an innovave
sculpture was added to the city's evolving landscape. A spectacular view of two rocks suspended in air
installed at Moazzamjahi Market Junction in Hyderabad is receiving huge applause.
Akalp Mukim, the brain behind the structure and the sculptor, reveals the science behind – the rocks are
balanced through opposite gravitaonal force. Akalp, an ex-Sherwoodian (ISC 1998-99) has created many
creave and innovave installaons over the years. It is noteworthy that the hand sculpture at Lakdikapul
was also sculpted by Akalp.
The sculpture made with fibre glass material has a mild steel
pipe inside acng as the support. The base rock moulded is
heavier compared to the one suspended above it to maintain
the stac balance. A collaborave effort of GHMC and the
sculptor, this piece of art is garnering aenon and admiraon.
Our school philosophy lays emphasis on following your passion
and we are proud that one of our alumni has set an ideal
example for us to follow.
Sindhura and Anvitha of ISC XII interviewed Akalp Mukim for Classroom Chronicles.

This is Anvitha. We are really happy that you were once part of the Sherwood family , I am super pumped
to be having this interview with you so without any further ado let's dive right in.
Akalp: Thanks ya , let's do it.
Anvitha: What movated you to make such unique sculptures?
Akalp: You find such sculptures abroad and there are in Mumbai too, so when we had a meeng with
the Director GHMC we came up with this idea and decided to have one at MJ Market road.
Anvitha: How long did it take for you to complete this?
